Now that the CTA trains crawl at a snail's pace, they no longer make that sound. Neither does this version of the song, but the name has stuck...

Since it sure seems like we really do need some interns here at The Song Of The Day Dot Com, we wrote and recorded this in February as part of our Record Production Month album, "All In A Day's Work." It's also a track on the 10th Annual International Pop Overthrow album from NotLame Records.

The pre-release of this album, entitled "All In A Day's Work", is currently available at iTunes.

I.T. workers, priests, and dudes with ponytails.

Grandpa's Chair

Obviously, we believe at in sharing music here at TheSongOfTheDay. When going through our archives, we found this song dating back to 1998. It's notable - to us at least - for being the first song we were able to share via the internet. We had just gotten our site www.beatnikturtle.com up and running (it was a page) and we posted this song to download as a WAV since mp3s weren't as prevalant then. Of course, broadband didn't really exist to the extent it does now either and it took forever for anyone to download!

The Love Notary

Featuring the great Qadree Holmes on vocals, this song goes out to all Notary Publics everywhere.

This song came about when Jason was asked to notarize a few immigration documents for two recently married friends of his - one of whom was applying for U.S. citizenship. When they asked Jason whether he could notarize their signatures "to prove it wasn't a sham marriage," he informed them they were in luck - he wasn't only a Notary, he was the "Love Notary."

They laughed a bit at his comment until they realized Jason was serious about the concept making "a great song for The Song Of The Day" and found themselves stranded in his office with unnotarized papers in hand.

Theme To Dolphins Of Damnation

Our friend Ted Blegen (of Ants and Commuter Railway Blues fame) has made the big move to Los Angeles. This song was the theme we made for the sketch comedy group he was in called, The Dolphins of Damnation. They performed in and around Chicago and at Second City on many occasions.

We wish Ted the best as he takes on Hollywood (though he's still Skyping songs into TheSongOfTheDay.com).

King Of Cicada

This song was 17 years in the making. It was written back in 1990 - the last time the 17-year Magicicada came out. It was inspired by a newspaper article written at the time about people eating the bugs ("They taste like potatoes!"). It was recorded and completed with one exception - the middle was to include the noisy roar of the 17-year cycle cicada. Unfortunately, Jason ended up spending the summer in Europe and missed seeing, hearing, and recording them.

Disappointed, he vowed to finish the song and wait the 17 long years for their return. Over the weekend they emerged -just like clockwork and today the song is finally complete.

I've No Pants

Happy No Pants Day! Beatnik Turtle had taken to wearing no pants long before we learned about No Pants Day. They asked if they could post this song (which takes Robert Goulet's bloated version of "To Dream The Impossible Dream" as its inspiration).

No pants Day is certainly a cause that we wholeheartedly support. In fact, we're looking to start a "Pants Day" for those who take the holiday too far and continue to wear no pants throughout the year we always do.

Well Fuck

In honor of April 20th...420...a number which has something to do with the subject of the song (although there's a lot of debate on our end as to why this number is associated with it).

Beatnik Lawyer says: Be warned! This song is extremely catchy and you're likely to start singing it aloud at odd times without really knowing it. This usually isn't too much of a problem except that, with this song, it's tagged "explicit" thanks to a certain ubiquitous four letter word that's sung throughout (we'll let you guess as to what that four letter word is). So, we made a clean version available as well (it's today's bonus song) but it's just about as catchy. Anyway, don't say you haven't been warned.

What Is Pete Gonna Eat?

Nevertheless, he always ate food that he shouldn't have which always caused him to run off to the bathroom. He did this without fail, so they started placing bets on what he'd eat. Unfortunately for Pete, Matt mentioned this story to Jason, who subsequently wrote a song about it.

Mason Rocket (Spy Extraordinaire)

This song is dedicated to Joe Murphy who lost his battle with cancer on 4/1/07. About eight weeks before this, our friend Mur Lafferty wrote in and asked if we could write a song about Joe's super spy alter ego, Mason Rocket. We did and since we recorded it during February, it became part of our Record Production Month album, All In A Day's Work

Joe Murphy was a podcaster, a writer, and a dear friend to many people. There's a memorial fund that Joe's friends created on his behalf. Donations are appreciated.
